Aberdeen Breakfast Briefing – An audience with Sir Ian Wood

Thursday 27 March 2014

Speaking publically for the first time since the release of his final report into Maximising Recovery from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), Sir Ian Wood today addressed Oil & Gas UK’s biggest ever audience, outlining his proposals and the opportunities and challenges facing the new industry regulator, selling out the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre in the process. The event, sponsored by Petrotechnics, was chaired by Malcolm Webb, who facilitated a Q&A address to over 700 delegates.

Topics of discussion included collaboration, key challenges, technology, the new industry regulator, independence, Budget implications – including the Chancellor’s fiscal review and current and future regimes in the UK and Scottish governments, allowances and infrastructure, all contributing to maximising economic recovery (MER) of the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) adding to the compelling story that is the North Sea.

Oil & Gas UK CEO Malcolm Webb commented: “The Wood Report is a seminal moment in the history of the UK oil and gas industry. It calls for radical change and reform on the part of government and industry alike, and provides a clear prescription to maximise the productive life of the UKCS. It presents a range of significant challenges for all those involved but equally offers the real prospect of success.

“Sir Ian’s work is largely done. It is now for all of us – in government and in industry – to properly implement the plan and realise Sir Ian’s vision as a reality. The rewards for all will be significant but this could also be a last chance and so failure cannot be contemplated.”

Oil & Gas UK’s Annual conference on 11 to 12 June in Aberdeen falls under the MER UK umbrella, with conference streams striving to answer the question: what must be done to ensure a sustainable future of the UKCS?

Over the two day event, delegates will hear from key members of government, regulators, industry leaders and specialists on a wide range of topics including: commercial issues and access to finance, data management, energy policy, environment, exploration, legal, operations, safety and skills and employment.
