Concept Origination

‘Concept Origination’ refers to the process of generating new ideas, theories, or principles, often with the goal of addressing a specific problem or need. It is the creative and intellectual act of conceiving a novel concept or identifying a unique approach, blending intuition, observation and strategic insight.

The act of searching for a solution to a particular issue in order to develop often unique and unanticipated solutions to intractable problems requires broad experience not only of the sector in which the exercise is focused but on a ‘pattern recognition’ strategy undertaken by a small team. Strong origination, in essence sets the trajectory for development.

Concept origination can occur in various domains, such as science, technology, business and more, and it often involves critical thinking, imagination, and the ability to connect disparate items of information in innovative ways. RMRI has undertaken such exercises on many occasions leading integrated teams and designing action plans.

For energy transition, concept origination is an exercise which carries significant uncertainty and no guarantees and hence strategic definition must be paramount and important often starting from options available, considering:

Appropriateness of ideas, technologies, strategies and risk assessment to identify ‘real options’.

Creativity and critical thinking strongly focused on risk management to address the challenges of transitioning.

The imperatives of technical readiness aligned with commercial viability as primary conditions.

Many varieties of transition pathway designs with different technological innovations.
