Porthos, the joint CO₂ transport and storage venture between the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Gasunie and EBN, announced that well conversion at its North Sea storage project was complete at the end of January 2026. Four former gas wells at the P18-A platform were converted for CO₂ injection, with three others sealed and removed. Porthos will store CO₂ from Rotterdam’s port industry in a depleted gas field, with injection due in autumn 2026.
RMRI notes that while production history provides strong evidence of structural containment, the fitness of existing wells for CO₂ service requires separate inspection against established material standards. Reusing a depleted field partially shifts the appraisal burden from confirming the reservoir to requalifying the existing wells.
