Project Greensand, the offshore CO₂ transport and storage project led by INEOS Energy with Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden, moved into commercial operation in the Danish North Sea on 18 September 2026. Liquefied CO₂, sourced primarily from Danish biomethane plants, is trucked to a dedicated terminal at the Port of Esbjerg, shipped by purpose-built carrier and injected into the depleted Nini West oil field about 250 km offshore. The first commercial phase can store up to 400,000 tonnes a year, with potential to expand to 4-8 million tonnes a year.
RMRI observes that Greensand is a transport and storage chain: terminal handling, shipping and offshore injection now operate together. Capture sits upstream with the emitters, and the first phase draws on CO₂ that is already readily available. Expansion towards 4-8 million tonnes a year therefore depends on industrial capture projects reaching delivery and matching their volumes to Greensand’s capacity. The constraint has moved from proving the storage to coordinating supply across the chain.
