Measurement, Monitoring and Verification (MMV)

An ‘MMV’ plan for a carbon storage project must incorporate many different activities, covering both subsurface and environmental considerations.

Pre-storage. A baseline must be established. This can rely on/utilise data including 3D seismic and legacy/new wells.

During storage operations. Seismic and wellbore observations must be repeatable, for comparison with the baseline. This way, the evolution of the accumulatingCO2 plume can be monitored for conformance with pre-determined models.

Post-storage. Once closed, seismic and wellbore observations must continue at a defined interval, until satisfied that containment is successful and stable, before returning a licence.
