Priorities for Energy Policy in Great Britain

On 21st February, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) published a draft ‘Strategy and Policy Statement’ (SPS) in accordance with the Energy Act 2013, setting out the government’s priorities for energy policy in Great Britain.

The four main chapters cover roles and responsibilities (outlining the high-level roles of government, Ofgem and the future National Energy System Operator), enabling clean energy and Net Zero infrastructure, ensuring energy security and protecting consumers, and ensuring the energy system is fit for the future. A list of relevant strategic priorities and policy outcomes is provided.

The SPS is a useful overview of government plans for the energy sector, including the role of natural gas and hydrogen, heat pumps and heat networks, carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS), and nuclear.
