The Global CCS Institute’s latest status report observes 77 commercial CCS facilities now in operation worldwide, capturing 64 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, with a further 44 Mtpa under construction. The global development pipeline has grown to 734 projects, representing 513 Mtpa of potential capture capacity. From a storage perspective, the report notes that dedicated CO₂ transport and storage projects doubled in Europe between 2023 and 2024, while Carbfix (Iceland) secured Europe’s first onshore CO₂ storage permit under the CCS Directive, showing regulatory frameworks are maturing for both offshore and onshore storage.
RMRI observes that while momentum is clearly strengthening, full value chain execution and alignment will turn on storage readiness coming through early, with sequenced permits and bankable transport and storage models enabling capture to follow.
