The European Commission published its progress report on the EU’s CO₂ injection capacity target under the Net-Zero Industry Act. Three storage sites are permitted in the EU – Porthos, Greensand and Prinos – with seven more awaiting a permit decision. Combined, these ten sites offer around 19 Mtpa of injection capacity, against an EU target of at least 50 Mtpa by 2030.
RMRI notes that the identified pipeline still falls well short of the 2030 target, and the Commission itself will not yet judge whether enough further sites will follow. Much turns on the 44 oil and gas producers obligated to contribute capacity, fewer than half of which have so far confirmed their commitment – making the pace of that commitment, more than permitting alone, the live constraint on reaching 50 Mtpa.
